{f}STIMMEN ZU ROSSANO B. MANISCALCHI{/f}
{k}{f}Attilio Bellanca
President Gallery House of Dante Alighieri{/f}{/k}
'God can see you', and so can Rossano B. Maniscalchi. A special correspondent in the field of reality, the implicative photographic eye documenting the private that likes to become public. He always comes with the self-discipline of the old family doctor to places where intimacy is about to become part of the social scene. With his pictures he documents such events of fabulous revelation with impartial cannibalism.
The myth is not the result of a naive way of thinking; it is the collective imagination the photographer manages to fashion into iconography appealing to all tastes and palates, the sophisticated and the infantile.
In a way Maniscalchi reveals the typical social attributes of a mass civilisation that demands that the famous bear unremitting responsibility for the way they look, the look upon which the lens of the camera is focussed permanently, knowing no breaks, no respite, no absolution.
From the intellectual drabness of the seventies, through the rampant hedonism of the eighties, right up to the protagonism of the nineties, the photographer has systematically documented all these changes through a "system of stars" in culture, politics, and haute couture, always with dexterity and with a sense of irony, expressing the passion that is released in the aloofness of the camera.
Detachment and participation, neutrality and curiosity, these become the polarities of the social explorer in the service of a profession that is never antagonistic, but privy.
Maniscalchi the entomologist has gathered a collection of portraits that retain the aloofness existing between the well-known and their adulating public. It is a visual gesture that, humanly, puts heroes into a social body.
{k}{f}Achille Bonito Oliva
Art critic{/f}{/k}
Rossano B. Maniscalchi uses black and white to give portraits and fashion photography a quite different boldness, the boldness of a painter in which the black and white become the substance and surface of pure colour and pure matter.
Sculpting bodies and their movements out of light and shade, and casting these bodies and these movements against a backdrop that often transforms the natural into architecture, is undoubtedly a typical subject of photography, technique, and of optical illusion. But the sleekness of proportions and the gentle irony of the unexpected way in which subjects are captured, such as the blurred features of a face in an overturned bottle of cologne, is a pure expressive and artistic gamble.
Maniscalchi gets it just right.
There can be no doubt that the experience he picked up in the United States has played a crucial role, a turning point, for him. I believe it was American light, which gives powerful emphasis to colours and allows them to stand out, inspired him to use black and white as the most sensitive manner of expression. This light liberates shapes from their own confines and expresses them as though its own rarity.
Man Ray, or Adams' pellucidity, come to mind. But the horizon over which Maniscalchi's camera roams is today's, and the pictures are attired in an ironic, plastic freshness.
